Picture Rocks is horse country, desert acreage, and wide-open space just northwest of Tucson, where property lines run long and fences define the working landscape. Block walls handle the perimeter security on most lots, but wood and vinyl fencing, gates, and automatic driveway systems are what make a ranch functional, a pool safe, and an RV yard secure.

Tucson Fence Company has served Picture Rocks and the surrounding Tucson area since 2015. We understand the specific demands of rural desert property: the caliche hardpan that makes post-hole digging slow and sometimes requires specialized equipment, the relentless UV sun that degrades untreated wood and fades powder coating far faster than anywhere back east, and the monsoon winds that can flatten a fence section in seconds. We show up with the right tools, the right crew, and honest guidance about what will hold and what will not.

Fence and Gate Work in Picture Rocks (85743)

Picture Rocks property runs the full spectrum: small residential lots with pool enclosures and side-yard privacy fencing, larger acreage with ranch and farm fencing, and everything in between. The defining local challenge is caliche, the cemented hardpan that lies just below the desert surface. Digging post holes here is not like digging in loam. We often need to auger through it or, on stubborn jobs, bring in a jackhammer. That takes time and the right equipment, which we have. We know the terrain, and we price honestly for it.

The second reality is sun. Wood that is left untreated will split and check within a season or two under Picture Rocks UV. Pressure-treated pine holds longer than cedar, but both need sealing on a shorter cycle than you would expect in a humid climate. Powder-coated metal fencing and gates will fade faster here than in most of the country. We help you choose materials that make sense for the desert and the long term, and we install them right the first time so they do not need to be replaced in five years.

Our team has been installing and repairing fences and gates across Picture Rocks and the greater Tucson area for nearly a decade. We are fully insured, with general liability and workers' compensation coverage, and we are members of the American Fence Association.

How a Fence Job Works in Picture Rocks

Step 1: Free On-Site Assessment. Call us at (520) 351-0669 or request a quote online. We come out to your property, walk the fence line with you, and look at what you have and what you need. We talk about your goals, the local code requirements (Picture Rocks and Pima County have specific rules on height, setback, and corner visibility), and any HOA restrictions if your property is in a master-planned community. We also make sure you have called 811 for a utility locate before we dig any post holes. That is the law in Arizona, and we follow it every time.

Step 2: The Work. We set posts in concrete (not just tamped), space them correctly to prevent sag and racking, and use galvanized hardware or powder-coated fasteners that will not rust or corrode in the desert sun. On ranch and farm fencing, we run tension bands and stretcher bars properly so your fence stays tight for years. On residential work, we install board-on-board or side-by-side pickets, cap and trim the rails, and leave the fence line straight and square. If you are adding a gate, we hang it plumb, set self-closing and self-latching hardware if you ask for it, and test it in full swing before we leave. On automatic driveway gates, we run the operator, test the safety reverse, and make sure it opens and closes smoothly.

Step 3: Cleanup and Walkthrough. We haul away all scrap and debris, sweep the area, and walk the finished fence with you. You see the work done right, and we are done when you are satisfied.

Pricing for fence work in Picture Rocks depends on material, length, and the caliche factor. Chain link runs from $16 per linear foot on the low end. Wood privacy fencing starts around $27 per linear foot. Vinyl and PVC run $38 per foot. Ornamental metal and aluminum are $42 per foot and up. Ranch and farm fencing can be as low as $12 per foot for simple wire and post work on large acreage. Gates start at $475 for a standard residential swing gate, and automatic driveway gates begin around $2,800 installed. Fence repair work starts at $450, and a full fence replacement or removal runs $2,400 and up depending on length and material. Storm damage assessment is free. The best way to know what your job will cost is to have us come out and look. Call (520) 351-0669 for a free estimate, or use the online quote request. We will give you an honest number based on what we see on your property.

Why does it take so long to dig post holes in Picture Rocks?
Caliche. It is a layer of cemented soil and rock that sits just below the desert surface and is rock-hard. A standard post-hole digger will not get through it. We use an auger or, on really stubborn caliche, a jackhammer to break it up. It adds time and cost, but it is the only way to set a post deep and solid in Picture Rocks. That is why we quote honestly for it and do not pretend it is not there.
What happens to wood fences in the Picture Rocks sun, and how do I keep one looking good?
Untreated wood will split, check, and warp within a season or two under the relentless UV. Pressure-treated pine holds up better than cedar, but both need to be sealed every two to three years, not every five or six like back east. The sun here is different. We can stain and restore a fence for you starting at $950, and we will tell you straight whether it is worth resealing or time to replace. If you are building new, we recommend pressure-treated pine with a quality exterior stain applied before installation.
A monsoon blew down a section of my fence. Do I need a permit to rebuild it, and what does it cost?
Pima County and the Picture Rocks area have specific rules on fence height, setback, and materials. Some jurisdictions require a permit and some do not. We will help you figure out what applies to your property. Storm damage repair often qualifies for expedited permitting or no permitting at all, depending on your exact location. Call us at (520) 351-0669 with photos or details, and we can give you a ballpark on repair cost. We offer a free damage assessment, and we can help you document the damage if you need to file an insurance claim.
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Picture Rocks?
It depends on your exact location and the fence height. Picture Rocks is in Pima County, and Pima County has specific rules. The county building department is your source of truth. We work from surveys and property lines you provide, and we coordinate with the county or city building department on permits whenever they are required. Call the Pima County Development Services department or your local city building office to confirm the rules for your address.
My HOA says my fence color or height has to match certain standards. How do I know if my plan will pass approval?
Master-planned communities in and around Picture Rocks often have strict architectural guidelines. Get a copy of your HOA rules and deed restrictions, and check the specific language on fence height, material, and color. Most HOAs require written approval before you start. We can work with you to design a fence that meets both your needs and your HOA standards, and we can help you prepare the request for approval. Once you have the green light from the HOA, we handle the installation.
Is Tucson Fence Company fully insured?
Yes. We carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance. We can provide a certificate of insurance on request. Arizona law requires a Registrar of Contractors (ROC) license for fence work when the job scope and cost meet certain thresholds. We operate with full knowledge of those requirements and work within them.
What should I do to prepare my fence for monsoon season?
Picture Rocks monsoons run roughly June through September, and the winds can be brutal. Before the season hits, walk your fence line and look for loose posts, leaning sections, or damaged rails. A post that is already wobbly will fail in a microburst. Tighten any hardware, repair any damage, and if you have a gate, make sure it swings freely and the hinges are solid. If you see a problem, call us. A $450 repair now is cheaper than a full section replacement after a storm. We also recommend anti-sag bracing on long runs of fencing, especially if you have vinyl or wood, to keep the fence from racking in wind.
